Design Philosophy
"Homes should be more than places to live, they should enrich the
owners life," Robert Ross.
Excellent
architectural design should not be dependent on budget. Good design should promote
interpersonal interaction
and provide a platform for the user's lifestyle. It should also reflect the
client's personality. Nothing is a more accurate reflection of
who we are than the spaces we create as our homes.
Each of us has created a series of personal rituals that accompany us throughout
the day. Ross Design is committed to creating ideal living environments that enhance
and enrich those rituals. A home should serve as a flowing sequence of useful
spaces appropriate to and supportive of the clients' lifestyle.
It is this attention to the individual needs of the client that sets Ross Design
apart. One of the most striking ways to achieve this reinforcement of
daily ritual is through the manipulation of natural light and spatial volumes to
emphasize the personal or public nature of spaces. An approach we use is
to focus on the transition zones between spaces. Another approach is through the
careful placement of external openings to create a strong
connection between the interior and exterior spaces while maintaining views and
privacy.
This attention particularly emerges in the detailing of a project. Human beings
respond to subtle physical cues in their environment without necessarily being
aware of that response. Appropriately used, details reinforce the desired intent
of a space. They can invite or limit approach. These details emerge from
and are based upon an understanding of underlying construction and engineering
principals.
Good design also involves responsible use of resources. We believe that
responsible design includes measures to reduce long range operating costs, the
use of alternate or recycled materials and refined construction and waste
management practices.
And finally, outstanding architecture demands much more than the ability to
create beautiful drawings, it necessitates an extensive knowledge about quality
craftsmanship and an understanding of responsible construction management.
